The EIB, the European Union's bank, is seeking to recruit for its Legal Directorate (JU), EU Operations Department (OPS-EU), Italy, Malta, Greece and Cyprus Division (IMGC), at its headquarters in Luxembourg, an (Associate) Luxembourg/Maltese/Cyprus/Italian/English Lawyer*.

This is a full time temporary position at grade 4/5.

The term of this contract will be 12 months: as this is a temporary replacement assignment, no extension or conversion of the contract is foreseen.

Purpose

The Italy, Malta, Greece, Cyprus Division (IMGC) deals with the legal documentation and legal issues for projects in the following countries: Italy, Malta, Greece and Cyprus. Together with other legal counsels, and under the authority of the Head of Division and Head of Department, the successful candidates will deliver legal support to the operational directorates.

Operating network

As an (Associate) Luxembourg/Maltese/Cyprus/Italian/English Lawyer, you will act under the authority of the Head of Division, in cooperation with the other lawyers of the Division and will collaborate with all other Divisions in the Legal Department – EU Operations, depending on the project.

Accountabilities

As an (Associate) Luxembourg/Maltese/Cyprus/Italian/English Lawyer, you will carry out work related to all the Division's responsibilities and work independently on financing operations in particular, with relation to projects mainly related to Italy and Greece.

The post may involve a certain amount of travel for negotiations and signatures of legal documentation.

You will:

  • Manage contacts and negotiations concerning the EIB operations handled by the Division in autonomy, working with various counterparts 
  • Draft documents, provide advisory legal support, finalise contracts, complete all related legal formalities and legal monitoring (including restructuring and other post-signature events), with or without the assistance of external counsel
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new products within the geographical remit of the Division
  • Understand and implement in contractual documentation the specificities arising from the various mandates underpinning the Division’s activities
  • Contribute to the development of standard legal documentation within the Division’s areas of activity
  • Work with other team members, including more junior colleagues and the Division’s paralegal, providing coaching to the extent applicable
  • Participate in horizontal activities of relevance to the Division
  • Liaise with external consultants and supervise their work
  • Conduct legal research on legal matters and developments of significance to the Division’s interests
  • Proactively keep up to date with legal developments in legislation, regulations and jurisprudence pertaining to the Division’s activities
  • Develop and maintain relationships within the Bank (including external offices) and represent the EIB externally

Qualifications

  • University degree (minimum an equivalent to a Bachelor) in law and professional legal qualification in either Italy, Greece, Malta, Luxembourg or UK.
  • Post-graduate legal studies at master level (LLM or equivalent) would be an advantage.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a major international law firm or a domestic law firm of international standing and reputation in the countries relevant for this position.
  • Significant professional experience in the field of banking, structured finance and/or project financing/PPP transactions, preferably acquired with a law firm of international reputation.
  • Solid experience in the drafting and negotiation of finance documentation in Italian or Greek and in English, ability to argue convincingly and achieve consensus among colleagues and third parties on legal problems.
  • Excellent knowledge of English and good knowledge of French. Knowledge of other EU languages, in particular Italian or Greek would be an asset.
  • Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise and meet deadlines.
