Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance elects new Dean

The University of Luxembourg’s Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance elected on 26 April a new Dean, Prof. Katalin Ligeti, who will take office with the start of the 2017-2018 academic year following a transition period of several months.

Katalin Ligeti will replace the outgoing Dean, Prof. Stefan Braum, whose five-year mandate will expire at the end of August. Prof. Braum had announced to staff at the beginning of February 2017 that he would not be seeking a second term. He will remain a professor at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance in future.

Following my own appointment five years ago, this is the second time that the leadership of the Faculty will change, with a clear mandate given to Katalin Ligeti by her colleagues,” commented Prof. Braum. “The renewal of the Faculty’s management is a regular but important process. Prof. Ligeti has an outstanding academic record and I look forward to working with her during the transition period. I am confident that she will rise to the challenge of leading our Faculty, of helping it to grow and continuously reach higher.

Starting in May, Prof. Ligeti will be working alongside the outgoing Dean for a transition period of four months, before officially starting in her new post on 1 September 2017.

I am very excited about this nomination and thank my colleagues for their trust to lead our Faculty and represent it within the University and also among our external partners and stakeholders,” said Prof. Ligeti. “I joined the Faculty in 2009 and have seen its development since then. My predecessors André Prüm and Stefan Braum have made significant contributions to the growth of this institution and I look forward to building on their achievements.

Katalin Ligeti is a professor of European and international criminal law and course director of the Master in European Economic and Financial Criminal Law (LL.M.) offered at the University of Luxembourg. She also coordinates the Doctoral Training Unit on Enforcement in Multi-Level Regulatory Systems (DTU REMS). She holds a doctorate in law (magna cum laude) from the University of Hamburg (Germany) and has widely published on topics of police and judicial co-operation in criminal matters, EU criminal law, comparative criminal procedure and economic and financial criminal law.

Since 2015, Prof. Ligeti is a member of the European Commission’s Expert Group on Criminal Policy as well as having been appointed Special Advisor of Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, Ms VÄ›ra Jourová, in April 2017. She is Vice President in Charge of Scientific Coordination of the International Association of Penal Law (AIDP) and co-coordinator of the European Criminal Law Academic Network (ECLAN).
